Built in 1784 by the fourth Nawab of Awadh, Asaf-ud-Daula, the central hall is one of the biggest in the world. The imambara was built to offer famine relief and is part of the Asaf-ud-Daula Imambara Complex along with a mosque, courtyard, step-wells and gateways. Close to the Bara Imambara, you’ll also find the smaller but no less magnificent Chota Imambara built in the 19th century. The beautiful Rumi Darwaza also built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1780 is also nearby the Bara Imambara. This is supposed to be an identical copy of the gate to Istanbul when it was part of the Byzantine Empire.
